What’s the difference between and ‘Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Care’ and ‘Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment’?

A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Care gives your named attorneys (someone you’ve given the authority to make decisions about your health and welfare) legal authority to make decisions on your behalf (if you cannot say them yourself at the time).

An Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT) is a set of instructions about treatment you do not wish to receive in the future if you cannot say your wishes at the time.

If you have a LPA for Health and Care, they should both follow your wishes and advocate for you with regard to those wishes.
